| Jonne Aaron of Negative conducted by Red |

| On September 8th in a club in Berlin, we sat down with the shy voice of Negative and had him open up to us. Through the bashful and soft spoken Jonne we learned of his influences, his favourite drinks and how he sees himself as nothing but a musician and the thought of being known as a sex symbol wierd. Noizefront: First off, what got you started in to the music industry? What made you decide this was what you wanted to do? Jonne: Kurt Cobain and Nirvana and also Guns 'N' Roses, just a lot of great bands, but mainly Nirvana back, I think it was in 1992. Noizefront: How did you guys decide on the name of the band? Jonne: We used to call ourselves 'Anita', it's a female name but then we gave up on that and I don't know, maybe it represents my own rock 'n' roll rebellion. You know, some kind of deep inside of me, I'm still that same shy and...rebel Jonne. Noizefront: What made you choose 'Anita' to begin with for your name? Jonne: Mm, Anita, it was actually the name of my friend's mother, she didn't like me at all. It was my revenge, sweet revenge. [He laughs.] But actually, Negative is also easy to forget and simple name, I think it's great. Noizefront: It is, I really like the name. Jonne: We are, we are like, you know, how can I say? You know, if you are comparing to normal people, we are the negative side. You know..like in a photograph. Noizefront: What is your favourite song to date that you have written and why? Jonne: Mm, I think all of them of course, but if I have to name one, pick one, I would say, 'Still Alive' because I was going through very difficult times in my life when I wrote that song and I was 14 years of age. Noizefront: Wow, you were only 14? Jonne: Yes, 15 actually. Noizefront: Did you feel like it helped you through that time? Jonne: Yeah, actually why I started to write and get my feelings down was like therapy to me. It's like a help me, you know, move on and leave all my problems behind. I think it is better, you know, that way than to, you know, go on the street and kick some old grannies over. Noizefront: [Laughs] Yeah. Jonne: So, so, I don't know, it has been a long road, you know. Noizefront: What are one of your favourite bands right now? What is the one CD that you brought with you right now that you cannot be without? Jonne: Muse. Yeah, Muse and Queen and erm, Foo Fighters. Noizefront: Really? Jonne: Yeah, it is great and er, what else? There is so many at the moment. Of course I have to say Guns 'N' Roses. Noizefront: So you are in to the older 80's bands? Like Guns 'N' Roses and Hanoi Rocks? Jonne: Yeah, I like, yeah. Noizefront: Are you enjoying it so far, being in Germany? Jonne: Yeah, we have had great gigs. I think we are getting better, day after day, day by day. Noizefront: If we were in Finland, what town would you recommend we go to? Jonne: Hmm, Tampere our home town. It's amazing. Everyone is talking about Helsinki all the time, you know, there is of course, HIM, the band HIM. They are from there and The Rasmus and also I think we are so far the only band from Tampere, it is really beautiful. Noizefront: Definitely, we will have to go. Jonne: Definitely. College, it is a college town. Noizefront: [Laughs.] Wild? Okay, why? Jonne: Shy, you know, out of the stage, when I am not on the stage, I am shy, real shy. But erm, when I get on stage it is like another reality to me. It is like some kind of animal inside of me is coming out. Noizefront: So you feel like when you are on stage you can step out of yourself, that maybe you can come out of yourself? Jonne: I feel as if I am free, it is more like that. Yeah. I don't feel like, you know, I'm not pretending, it is like ying and yang. Noizefront: Do you believe in ghosts? Jonne: On some level, yeah. Noizefront: And have you had any creepy experiences? Jonne: I have been reading about that. Alot, a couple of books, um, yeah, I believe. I think this represents on some level my spiritual side, [he points to his Jesus Christ tattoo on his left arm]. It is in memory of my grandfather. Noizefront: Oh really? That is very cool. Jonne. [He nods] Yeah. But yes, I believe in ghosts, yeah. Noizefront: Is that the only tattoo that you have? Jonne: Mmm, yeah so far. Noizefront: Do you plan on getting any more? Jonne: Yeah, I think he seems lonely. [He laughs]. Noizefront: What about piercings? Besides your nipple, do you have any others or any plans to get any others? Jonne: No, only just my ears. Maybe later...I've got some plans... [He blushes and looks down.] Noizefront: [Laughs] I see you're blushing a bit there. It doesn't hurt. Jonne: Okay. Noizefront: We as a fanzine, when we come to the gigs, we usually bring care packs for the bands. If you were in LA and we came, what would you like in a care pack personally? Besides socks and t-shirts. Jonne: Underwear. I forgot all my underwear, it is in Finland, so er, I have been searching all over the town. Now I have to be without them. Erm, what else? I don't know, I don't know. I love presents. Noizefront: Okay, if we had known we would had brought you something, we usually do. Noizefront: What is the weirdest thing you have ever received? Jonne: There is so many of them. The latest one was the scarf that I got today. It was nice. One girl from the UK gave it to me, so it was nice. Noizefront: Now that you are in a rock band are all your 'schoolboy' fantasies coming true? Is it overwhelming with the fan base that you get, you specifically? Jonne: Yes, yeah. Noizefront: Does it surprise you at all? Jonne: I think we've been touring in Finland for so many years before we got signed so, I think it is natural and we are lucky because of that and we have so many fanatic people always being there for us and it seems like wherever we are going, it seems like there are always some people waiting for us. It is amazing, yeah. I'm surprised. Noizefront: There was about forty people when we got here and we arrived about 45 minutes before you guys arrived. Jonne: This is our first tour in Germany and I think we are going pretty strong in the way that we are going. Noizefront: How does it feel to you now because you are considered a 'sex symbol' so to speak by a lot of your fans.. Jonne: Okay.. Noizefront: Does it feel weird? Jonne: Yeah, it feels weird because I don't feel like that, you know, when I'm laying in a tour bus, you know, in my shitty underwear...[He laughs.] Noizefront: It is the furthest thing from your mind.. Jonne: Yeah, yeah. I don't think that kind of thing at all. It is like music is the most important thing of all. I try to stay honest to myself, you know, it's, as long as it is only me and my acoustic guitar. As long as no record company comes between me and my guitar or anything else. What is going on around you as long as it comes from your heart, that is the most important thing. Whatever you are doing, you know, I think these days people are thinking too much money. Noizefront: I would agree. Do you play your guitar a lot when you are actually performing? Because we haven't actually seen you perform live yet. Jonne: Really? Okay. Noizefront: Yeah, tonight will be our first time. Jonne: Okay, but I used to play one song 'About My Sorrow', I used to play some, you know, some acoustic guitar, but tonight we are not going to play that. Noizefront: What is your favourite song to perform live? Jonne: It depends, you know. Noizefront: On your mood? Jonne: Yeah, yeah. Noizefront: Do you play anything other than the guitar? Jonne: Yes, a little bit of piano, drums, bass and erm harmonica. Noizefront: Oh, really? Jonne: Yeah, 'Until You're Mine' there is my harmonica solo. Noizefront: That is actually you playing? Jonne: Yeah, you can tell. Because when we went to the studio, it was my first time ever I tried to play. I didn't know anything about it. I just went to the recording room and my producer just told me, 'Just play..' and I was like, 'What the fuck am I doing?' I think it went pretty well though. Noizefront: What do you feel right now is the highlight of your career so far? Jonne: This tour, definitely. Noizefront: Is there a favourite place that you have played so far? Jonne: Japan. Japan is one of them, one of those places and erm, also we had a great time in Russia and in Finland we are playing all the time. I don't know, it is so hard to say. I used to get so nervous before I went on stage so I used to throw up all the time, not any more. These days I am getting better. Noizefront: I was going to ask you that because I had read that. Jonne: Yeah, it wasn't fun, I was thinking. I remember when I was thinking about that. I was thinking, 'Is this what I am going to do for the rest of my life?' You know, 'What are you doing before leaving?' 'I'm throwing up.' [He laughs.] You know, oh okay! Noizefront: Do you still get really nervous before you perform? Jonne: Yeah, every time, still every time. Noizefront: Is there something you do now that helps you to relax? Jonne: I think out of the band I am the most nervous, I'm always nervous. I can turn it, you know in to a positive energy. I get all this energy from the audience. I don't know, I haven't tried Heroin but I can only imagine, you know, it is the strongest drug in the world, but you know, the audience..rock 'n' roll is my drug. I don't need anything else. Noizefront: Have you been paying attention to the news at all? Jonne: No. Noizefront: So you are not familiar with what is going on in New Orleans? Jonne: I know Katrina, yes. Noizefront: I was just going to see what you thought about how it was handled, all the violence that occured in New Orleans. Jonne: They were waiting for a long time, yeah I read about that. Noizefront: I just wondered what your opinion was on that? Jonne: I think, I think United States are able to help, you know, sooner than that, so.. I don't know. Noizefront: I would definitely agree. Jonne: Mother Nature, you never know what is going to happen. It is mad. Terrifying. Noizefront: What do you like to do in your spare time. When you are away from touring, what do you do to relax? Jonne: I like to hang around in local bars, in Tampere, actually in Tampere it is a city where we are living but the area, the neighbourhood, but the area is called Tampere. And there is a nice few bars like Pussycats, and a strips bar and Armadaos is a nice one. And a, one friend of mine, he used to call the bar Amandaos. It is a, you know, the rainbow bar of Tampere, like LA. I like to sleep, eat, to shit.. [He laughs.] I don't know. What we all like doing! Noizefront: What is your favourite drink when you go out to a bar? Jonne: Mmm, something strong, but exotic. Noizefront: A cocktail? Jonne: Mm, yeah, maybe a Salmiakkikos. It is Finnish traditional kind of drink, I think you can't find that out of Finland. Noizefront: Probably not. Jonne: Yeah, it is like a strong booze and strong candy. Black one, it's black and it's nice and White Russian, yeah, that is nice. If you've have a hang over. Noizefront: Start drinking again. [Laughs.] Jonne: [He laughs.] Yeah, keep drinking. I like to watch a lot of movies. Noizefront: What kind of movies do you like? Jonne: Erm, lately I have been watching a lot of horror movies and I used to, you know, I also love a lot of romantic drama, kind of movies. Noizefront: Do you have a favourite horror movie? We are both huge horror buffs. Jonne: Hmm, maybe The Shining. Noizefront: Oh yeah, that is a great movie. Jonne: Yeah. Also..IT, you know, Stephen King. I was about ten years old, under ten years old but when I saw that and I was like 'urghh! Help me!' [Makes a scared sound.] Noizefront: Did you have a good birthday this year? Because it was recent. Jonne: Yeah, you know I was staying at home, just you know by myself. Noizefront: Did you always want to be in a rock band when you were a kid? Jonne: No... Noizefront: What did you want to do? Jonne: I wanted to be a police officer, or some kind of other helping..helping..man. But you know, when I turned twelve, I got this idea about the band, of the band. Noizefront: How did the band all come together, all the different members? Jonne: Hm, first I met Jay, he was at my school and er, I met him in 1997 and erm, a couple of years after that I met Antti our bass player and then Larry came along, then Christos and then Snack was the latest one. Actually, you know, we all..all of us are so used to playing in different bands and we used to do some gigs together. And there was a kind of situation going on in the Tampere music scene that there was all these, you know, pop pun bands, you know they were staring at their feet and they didn't move at all on stage and they were like 'urgh...' You know, very pathetic. Noizefront: Yeah. Jonne: And then I met these guys and they were like perfect. I want that guy! You know, all the craziest mother fuckers. Noizefront: Your fashion sense is absolutely original. The only thing I can compare it to is Michael Monroe, in some shoots I've seen of you. Do you get influenced by the way you dress from him, or did you just put your clothes together like that? Jonne: Actually, yeah, I have to admit that when we started after I met Christos, he got that style and I was like, 'What the fuck? You motherfucking freak!' You know, I got some influences from him but also Michael Monroe he had such great style already 80's. So I'm still thinking they were the coolest band from the 80's. Noizefront: I would totally agree. Jonne: If you could only see what people look like in the 80's in Finland. Noizefront: I can imagine, [laughs] back in the 80's the way they dresses lots of leather and spandex.. Jonne: But these days, I'm not, you know, not following anyone's style. This is a present from Japan for example, [he points to his waistcoat], and these are from a second hand store that I purchased, [points to his jeans]. If I find something that I like I just take it. Noizefront: The reason I asked really is because we have not seen a photo of you personally where you have not looked good. I don't just mean aesthetically beautiful, but there isn't one picture where you don't look the rockstar. You always look the 'rockstar', you really do. That picture I have seen of you with the little pink umbrella that is in Japan. Jonne: I know what one you mean.. Noizefront: I just really wanted to know where..if you put any thought in to it or you just do what you do. You are probably one of the most down to earth musician's that I have ever interviewed. Jonne: Really? Okay, thank you. It is nice to hear, thanks. Noizefront: Is this the kind of thing you would wear when you are not performing, or is this just what you would wear on stage? Jonne: Erm, I was wearing these pants the day before yesterday, you know, Tuesday..so yeah, that's what I am. Maybe some time I get a little bit stronger feeling that I wanted to look...more like a Christmas Tree, [laughs]. Noizefront: What are your bad habits? Jonne: Bad habits, I'm late, usually I maybe, I am spreading all my stuff all over the tour bus and you know, I lost my scarves, my clothes, my things.. Noizefront: Your clothes all over everywhere? Jonne: Yeah, [laughs] I have to say one thing that when I met these guys, these other guys from the band, you know, just like that I realised that they had the same kind of attitude that I have, you know and passion for music and passion for playing and writing also. It is very important. There are a lot of bands that are playing for living, but we are living for playing. |
